Movie Review: Borat

Grade: D
Well, we final got to rent Borat. I heard about this film quite a bit, especially from a couple of guys at work. Also, Borat appeared as a spoof at Myla's chair party as some neurology residents put together their annual movie skit. First of all, Myla did not finish the movie. She left after the usual "20 minute rule." (If a movie does not grab you by 20 minutes, forget it.) I stuck with it for the whole thing. There are some funny moments like finding Mr. Jesus, the frat boys, the evening of fine dining, and the Pamela Anderson bit at the end. Overall, the crude elements just don't ring with me, since a lot of crude is not my bag, anyway. I knew it was parody, but it crossed over the line for me, especially the Jews and gay segments. What is interesting is that there is that ignorance in the world and I guess that it is still pretty disturbing. Yes, I think that is it. There was some disturbing undertones to the movie that I was not really expecting. I'm not sure if the film makers had that in mind, and if so, then it did succeed. At times, parody can be offensive and humor is a way to deal with offensive things in the world. Because of this sentiment, I did not give an F. --Bryan
